The Comfort Factor

The importance of comfort should never be underestimated. Discomfort, often progressing to pain, may lead to an inability to function throughout the day and eventually abandonment of the wheelchair. Even transport chairs (wheelchairs designed for the sole purpose of moving a patient from A to B) must be comfortable to remain viable, as they are often used far more often, and for longer periods of time, than originally intended.

Selecting the most suitable wheelchair is very important as most people that require the aid of the wheelchair spend most of their time (average about 15 hours) while they are awake seated in a wheelchair. A fitting and comfortable wheelchair is essential to provide the necessary support and comfort. If not, a wheelchair bound person may easily suffer from other health problems.

If you get something cheaper and you're trying to make it work, you're likely to be very disappointed and uncomfortable.

At Troy Technologies, we take the science of comfort seriously.  We put our products through a weight distribution analysis test.  With the use of a pressure sensor mat we can spot pressure points that will inevitably result in discomfort for the user.  Troy Technologies will not sell wheelchairs that exhibit extreme pressure points.

Example of an uncomfortable seat This is a relief map image of a person seated in a common wheelchair.  The yellow and red areas are extreme pressure points caused by a portion of the body known as the ischium. This is the bony portion that supports weight while sitting (especially noticeable on a hard surface).  Inevitably leading to discomfort, this wheelchair is unsuitable for long term seating. Troy Technologies does NOT sell the wheelchair used in this test as its comfort rating is below our standards.
